33 Variations is a stage play created by MoisÈs Kaufman, based and inspired by the work of Ludwig van Beethoven, Diabelli Variations. The play debuted on Broadway in 2009. The world premiere was at the Arena Stage in Washington, DC. The play has been nominated to several Tony Awards in 2009, including Best Play, and had won the Best Scenic Design of a Play.
The 33 Variations play explores the reasons and meaning behind why Beethoven wrote 33 very distinct variations for a simple theme that an unknown music publisher had created. Musicologist Katherine Brandt takes the audience from the present time to the time of Beethoven ñ back and forth between these eras.
Although the time frames are switched back and forth, there are times when characters from these two different time periods appear on stage and deliver their lines simultaneously. This would emphasize the parallels of the characters (and the variations) in these different time frames.
