A Chorus Line is the title of a musical that revolves around seventeen Broadway dancers auditioning for spots on a chorus line. The book was written by James Kirkwood, Jr. and Nicholas Dante. Lyrics were written by Edward Kleban and music was composed by Marvin Hamlisch. The original broadway production was directed and choreographed by Michael Bennett and the production experienced unprecedented box office and critical hit. The production received twelve Tony Award nominations and won nine of them. It even won the 1976 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The show ran for 6,137 performances making it the longest running production in Broadway history at the time. It remains to be the longest running Broadway musical originally produced in the country and the fourth longest running Broadway show ever.
The musical starts with director Zach and assistant choreographer, Larry putting the gypsies through their paces. The dancers are desperate for work and after making the first cut, seventeen dances remain. Zach wants to get to know each of the dancers and this leads each of the dancers to reveal their pasts chronologically. The dancers all have different stories that all end in them finding love and passion for dancing and ballet. Also in the musical, Zach is reunited with his past love, Cassie. After making the needed cut, eight dancers remain but the musical ends in a reprise with all nineteen characters dancing together in similar costumes.
