A Free Man of Color is a comedic play written by John Guare. The play was first commissioned to be produced at The Public Theater but Guare would not accept Publicís requirement to shorten the lengthy (more than 5 hours!) play. In the end, the play moved to Lincoln Center Theater.
The story is set in 1801 in New Orleans. Jacque Cornet is a man born from a rich Caucasian father and his black slave. Jacque grows up a free man and eventually inherits his fatherís fortune while his Caucasian half brother is disinherited. The story also revolves around Jacqueís supposedly large phallus and his prowess in bed ñ with many simulated sex scenes under the sheets.
However, Jacqueís Don Juan days were disrupted by the Louisiana Purchase and the events that soon followed. Significant characters in history are also included in the play ñ i.e., Thomas Jefferson, Napoleon Bonaparte, Walter Reed, and others.
The play is not appropriate for kids but teenagers are accepted.
