The Allman Brothers Band is a band that started out with real Allman brothers, Duane and Gregg in Georgia, USA. Duane played the lead guitar and slide guitar while Gregg does the vocals and also played the piano. The original members also included Dickey Betts, Berry Oakley, Butch Trucks, and Jai Johanny “Jaimoe” Johanson.
The band started playing in 1969 with Southern rock incorporated with various other genres and elements such as hard rock, blues rock, and even instrumental songs. Due to this, the band is often referred to as the “Principal Architects of Southern Rock” and hailed “the best damn rock and roll band” in the past 5 years by Rolling Stone’s Magazine’s George Kimball in 1971.
Duane died in a motorcycle accident in 1971 but the band decided to continue playing. Various problems and events – including drug problems – tore the band apart. It was reformed in 1978 but was again disbanded in1982. Still, by 1989, the band regrouped and has regained their popularity once again.
In 1995, the band was inducted into the “Rock and Roll Hall of Fame”; the following year, they won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance in their song “Jessica”. The band turned 40 years old in 2009 – a 15-night stand was held with various artists, including Eric Clapton, performing with the band.
