Amadeus is a stage play inspired by the life of music genius Amadeus Mozart and rival-friend Antonio Salieri. The story is a highly fictionalized version of the real tale. It is written by Peter Shaffer. Because the play is a biography of sorts, highly fictionalized though it may be, plenty of Mozartís and Salieriís compositions are used throughout the acts. Some works of notable composers in that era are also used in the play.
The story opens with Salieri, already an old man attempting to explain to the audience just what had happened in his life ñ how he came about to murdering Mozart. The story then unfolds in flashbacks. Including how Salieri had admired Amadeus for being a genius until he met the latter. He could not understand why such a boorish man could have been given by God such a beautiful talent. He renounces God and vows to take revenge on him by destroying his genius creation.
Salieri befriends Mozart but backstabs him, doing everything in his power to keep the latter from succeeding. Then, he confesses to murdering Mozart with arsenic. As the play ends, he attempts suicide but survives ñ yet his supposed account of Mozartís murder was disbelieved by all.
