The Atlanta Falcons is a professional American football team based in Atlanta, Georgia. They are a member of the NFC South division of the National Football Conference in the National Football League. The Falcons is owned by Arthur Blank with Tomas Dimitroff as the team’s general manager and Mike Smith as the team’s head coach. Atlanta Falcons’ characteristic colors are red, black, silver, and white. The team’s home games are played in the Georgia Dome from 1992 to the present. The Atlanta Falcons franchise was established on June 30, 1965 when Pete Rozelle, then NFL commissioner, granted ownership to Rankin Smith Sr.. The Falcons played their first season in 1966 on August 1, however, they lost to the Philadelphia Eagles. Their first nine regular-season games was a failure but they managed to secure their first victory over the New York Giants. After the1960s season, the team finished with only 12 wins. During the 1970 season, the Atlanta Falcons had their first Monday Night Football game in Atlanta. It was also during the 1970s, specifically the 1971 season that the team experienced its first winning record. The greatest season for the Atlanta Falcons “Dirty Bird” was in 1998 when the team finished with a 14-2 regular season record and the NCF West division championship. In 2008, the Atlanta Falcons earned a trip to the playoffs for the first time since 2004 by beating the Minnesota Vikings 24-17 but lost in the wild card round of the 2008 NFL playoffs. In the 43 years existence of the Atlanta Falcons, the team has compiled a record of 275 – 399 – 6 with division championships in 1980, 1998, and 2004.
