This is the professional ice hockey team based in Atlanta, Georgia and is a member of the Southeast division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League. The Thrashers play their games at the Phillips Arena in downtown Atlanta.
The city was awarded the NHL Franchise in 1997, which is a return of the franchise to Atlanta after the old Atlanta Flames departed for Canada. The name ëThrashersí was a runner up to ëFlamesí when Atlanta was looking to name its first NHL team. The Phillips Arena was also built on the same spot where the Omni, former home of the Flames, once stood.
Recent troubles with the playoffs for the past seasons led to the decision not to renew Coach John Andersonís contract. The same was also done to the rest of his coaching staff. The teamís official mascot is Thrash, after the Brown Thrasher which is the official state bird of Georgia.
