The plot of the play centers on the reunion of the Weston family. The play consists of three acts which run for approximately 3 hours and 20 minutes including intermissions. The play deals with issues including drug abuse, alcoholism, suicide, death, family dysfunction, sexual harassment, pedophilia, aging, generational change, racism, incest, infidelity and love.
The play opens with Beverly, father of the Weston family, conversing with Johnna, his wife’s caregiver. The ending of the act will be Beverly’s last appearance in the play. In the first act, it has been discovered that Beverly has been missing for five days. Near the end, Beverly’s body was found drowned in a lake, presumed to be his suicide. In the second act, the members of the Weston family are present. Violet’s daughters share their stories. Later, Violet’s drug habit is realized by the members of the family and help is called immediately to rid the house of all of Violet’s prescription medications. The last act begins with the doctor suspecting Violet is suffering from brain damage. The rest of the show depicted ugly confrontations between sisters and between mother and daughters. The play then ends with Johnna, the only person left caring for Violet.
