Belmont Stakes is a Grade I stakes race that is held in June in Elmont, New York, United States. The races were inaugurated in 1867, and are held at Belmont Park. It is also known for being the third leg of the Triple Crown, which also consists of the Preakness Stakes and the Kentucky Derby. In these races, three-year old thoroughbred horses are raced along 1.5-mile tracks, with hopes of defeating the other horses.
The races held in Belmont Park have been noted to be one of the top races that have the most turn-out in attendance. These races are also known as ìRun for the Carnations,î because at the end of each race the winners have a blanket made out of white carnations draped on their neck. Although current races are being held at Belmont Park, the first race was held in The Bronxís Jerome Park Racetrack.
One of the most memorable events that happened at the Belmont Stakes was when Sarah Lundy participated in 1984. This marked the first time that a female trainer saddled a horse at the said race.
