Dirty Dancing is a musical based on the 1987 romantic film of the same title made in the United States. Originally released as a low-budget film, it quickly gained popularity. In fact, it is the first film to ever sell more than a million copies on home video. The film and its songs also received several awards, including a Grammy Award, Golden Globe Award, and Academy Award on ì(I've Had) The Time of My Lifeî.
With the success of the film version, a theater musical was soon created. This proved to be quite popular, too, gaining positive reviews and sellout performances in various parts of Europe, North America, and Australia. A Broadway production is also under way.
The musical and the film tells the story of 17-year-old Frances "Baby" Houseman who starts a rebellion against her father by starting a relationship with a dance instructor of the resort where she and her family are vacationing. She learns and enjoys the sexy ìdirty dancingî done by the staff. In the end, she becomes part of the show and performs what is known to be ìthe most goosebump-inducing dance sceneî ever to be made in movie/theater history.
