About Eric Clapton
Eric Patrick Clapton was born March 30, 1945 at Ripley, England to parents Patricia Molly Clapton and Edward Walter Fryer. Before he was born, his Canadian soldier father who was stationed in England went home to his wife. Since his mother was still 16 years of age, he was raised by his grandparents.

Clapton was raised in a musical household. At his 13th birthday, he asked for a guitar. The 16-year-old studied at Kingston College of Art on probation but was expelled because of lack of progress. When he was 17 years of age, he started to take part on bands such as The Roosters, Casey Jones and The Engineers, Yardbirds, Cream, Blind Faith, Derek and had his own bands. He continually developed his version of the Blues.

He recorded his first solo self-titled album in 1970 which became a hit, introducing him as the lead vocalist. Even with success, he had alcohol and drug problems but got himself rehabilitated. He then released albums like “461” and other hits which went gold and “Slowhand” and “Backless” went platinum. He also wrote music for a film about drug addiction, “Rush”.

In 1992, after his son died, Clapton taped a segment for MTV with “Layla” and “Tears in Heaven” made popular, the latter written for his son. The same year he was nominated for 9 Grammies and won 6 of them.
