About Follies

Follies is a successful musical production based on a book by James Goldman, with Stephen Sondheim composing music and lyrics.

The musical tells a story of a reunion made by former performers of the Weismannís Follies that has now become a crumbling theatre. The musical also focuses on two couples namely Sally and Buddy Palmer, and Phyllis and Ben Stone. As the couple enters the Broadway theatre and starts practicing for their former scenes in which they starred, they are greeted and danced and sang together with the ghosts of their young selves. Throughout the course of the musical, it can be seen that both couples are having problems with their marriages. Sally shows her undying love for Ben, Phyllis shows her adoration for her husband, Ben struggles with the choices he has made in life, while Buddy struggles with the choices he has made in love. As the rehearsals end and dawn approaches, the couples help escort each other off the stage as they are watched by the ghosts of their former selves.

The Follies was directed by Harold Prince and Michael Bennett and formerly opened on April 4, 1971. The production was nominated for eleven Tony Awards, winning seven out of the eleven nominations.
