You may have noticed it was impossible to enter a coffee shop in the summer of 2010 without catching Mark Foster crooning apathetically about “Pumped up Kicks” for at least a few seconds. It was a great summer, wasn’t it?
Foster the People formed in Los Angeles in 2009 when front man/guitarist/keyboardist Mark Foster got together with his drummer friend, Mark Pontius, and bassist Cubbie Fink. “Pumped Up Kicks” enjoyed early success when KROQ, a local radio station, started giving them air time. The deejay confessed it was his "favorite song on KROQ right now". From there, "Pumped Up Kicks" rapidly became a breakout internet sensation.
Following up on their early popularity they soon released Torches, which was lauded by critics and listeners alike, and which earned them two Grammy Nominations (for Best Alternative Album and Best Pop Duo/Group). Torches was released on Columbia records with the production expertise of Paul Epworth, Rich Costey, and Greg Kurstin. Epworth, Costey and Kurstin have worked on notable acts such as Adele, Interpol, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, respectively.
Foster the People's sound can be characterized as catchy alterna-pop with foot-shaking beats and forays into electronica; sublime tunes, at turns dreamy and gritty, which lack the pretentiousness of most modern day pop. While Foster the People are often compared to fellow indie bands MGMT, Phoenix, and Peter Bjorn & John, they cite such diverse musical influences as Motown, Brian Wilson, and electronica granddaddy Aphex Twin.
Since the release of Torches, Foster the People concerts have taken place in coveted venues such as David Letterman, Saturday Night Live, NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts and The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Next up, they will perform at the 54th Annual Grammy Awards alongside The Beach Boys.
Foster the People tickets will take you to a great show. Torches is more than simply a vehicle for their “Pumped up Kicks” single, boasting other great songs like “Miss You,” “Houdini,” and “Life on the Nickel,”. Foster and company jam along spastically and encourage the audience to dance, whistle, and sing with them. Lights and bubbles are not uncommon in Foster the People concerts.
