Iphigenie en Tauride, otherwise known as ìIphigeneia in Tauris,î is an opera created by Christoph Willibald Gluck that is divided into four acts. The opera involves a libretto that was composed by the great Nicolas-Francois Guillard. The opera is known as Gluckís fifth opera was created for the French stage.
Based on the known play of the same name created by Euripides, the Greek dramatist, the opera showcases Greek mythologies that focus on the aftermath of the Trojan War, particularly on Agamemnonís family. Deemed as his last significant and memorable opera, numerous scholars believe that the opera sums up the ideals that Gluck pursued throughout his career.
The Iphigenie en Tauride first came into play for the public on May 18, 1779. It was only during the season of 1916 to 1917 that the opera found its way to American shores. However, since its first performance, it waited until 2007 for its second performance. Recently, a revival of the opera has been planned, which would be transmitted to movie theatres across the globe.
