La Traviata is libretto, which is also referred to as an opera, and is comprised of three acts. It was created by Giuseppe Verdi and the whole opera is set to an Italian libretto created by Francesco Maria Piave. La Traviata was based on a play entitled, La dame aux Camelias, which was adapted from a novel by Alexandre Dumas.
La Traviata literally means The Woman Gone Astray and is also translated to a more figurative phrase - The Fallen Woman. Its original title was Violetta which is named after the opera's main character.
Verdi and Piave wanted to retain the contemporary setting that was indicated in the novel by Alexander Dumas in the play but the higher authorities at La Fenice wanted that the opera be set in the past. It was not until the 1880s that both the librettist and composer's wishes for the setting were carried out and production was transformed into a more realistic setting.
