The Minnesota Vikings, also known simply as ‘The Vikings’ or ‘The Vikes’, is a professional American football team based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. They compete in the North Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) of the National Football League (NFL). They have been a member of the NFL since their official establishment in 1961. They became a member of the NFC in 1970. Prior to 2002, when the divisional realignment occurred, the team was a part of the Blue and Black Division, also known as the Central Division, of the NFL’s NFC. The team was named the Minnesota Vikings in September 1960. Their name was chosen in order to reflect Minnesota’s rich Scandinavian-American History. Team colors are purple and gold and their team logo represents a side-view of a Viking. The Vikings succeeded in winning the NFL title in 1969; they have also managed to reach the Superbowl playoffs and finals several times. The team also won NFC titles for 1973, 1974, and 1976. They are known for their defensive strategy, especially against the run. This lead them to be ranked number 1 in the NFL from 2006 to 2008. The front four of the Vikings’ defense include Kevin Williams, Pat Williams, Ray Edwards, and Jared Allen are known as the ‘Four Norsemen of the Apocalypse’.
