About Music Man

The Music Man is a musical written by Meredith Willson. It is based on a story by Meredith Willson and Franklin Lacey. The show debuted on Broadway in 1957, becoming a hit that year, and went on to win 5 Tony Awards. It is produced by various theater companies, amateur or professional.

The Music Man is none other than ìProfessorî Harold Hill who is actually a con man. He goes from one town into another, convincing parents and schools that he can teach the kids music. Heíd organize a band, order instruments, and create uniforms. Then, when the instruments arrive, heíd slip out of town with the money that the townspeople had paid for the instruments.

While trying to con the townspeople of River City, Iowa, he met his match in the person of prim librarian, Marian Paroo, who sees right through him and recognizes him as a con man. However, they fell in love. In the end, Hill woos Marian and leaves his con man life behind.
