The New Jersey Devils is a professional ice hockey team that is based in Newark, New Jersey. The team is a member of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). The New Jersey Devils was originally founded in Kansas City, Missouri with the name the Kansas City Scouts in 1974. The team then moved to Denver, Colorado where they took on the name The Colorado Rockies for two seasons before settling in New Jersey in 1982.
For the team’s first 13 seasons, the franchise’s performance was rated poor to mediocre and was only able to make the playoffs once. Now, under Lou Lamoriello, the current president and general manager of the team, the New Jersey Devils have made the playoffs in 19 out of the last 21 seasons that they played. The team was able to win the Stanley Cup thrice in 1995, 2000, and 2003.
The Devils are hard rivals with the New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers. Since the division’s creation, the Devils have won the Atlantic Division season title eight times with its most recent win during the 2008-2009 season. The team is well known for its defensive-oriented style of play on the ice.
