The New York Islanders is a professional ice hockey team and is a member of the NHL or National Hockey League. The team is based in Uniondale, New York and belongs to the Atlantic Division of the League's Eastern Conference. Also referred to as the Islanders, the team is one of the three franchises in NHL that are based in New York City, with the other teams being the New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils.
The New York Islanders was founded in 1972 and was ushered into the 1972-1973 NHL season as parts of the plan to keep the rival World Hockey Association away from the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The Islanders have played in that arena since their founding.
The Islanders are one of the nine NHL dynasties having won four consecutive Stanley Cup championships between the NHL seasons from 1980 to 1983. According to several critics and commentators, the future of the Islanders largely depends on the success of the Lighthouse Project which includes a new area for the team.
