Next to Normal is a production based on the book and lyrics written by Brian Yorkey and music written by Tom Kitt. This is a rock musical that revolves around the lives of a mother who is suffering from bipolar disorder and how this is affecting her family. It started out as a workshop production before being presented in off-Broadway and pre-Broadway productions in 2008. The first off- Broadway production was held from January to March 2008 at the Second Stage Theater. In this presentation, the surname of the family was changed from Brown to Goodman.
A pre-Broadway show was staged in the Arena theater in Crystal City, Virginia, with most of the off-Broadway cast participating in the production.
The show previewed on Broadway on March 27 at the Booth Theater before it opened on April 15, 2009 with the cast from the Arena Stage production coming back to reprise their roles. In 2009, a smaller adapted version of the play started playing on social networking site, Twitter.
