Oklahoma is a musical created by Oscar Hammerstein II and Richard Rogers. It is based on the 1931 play, Green Grow Lilacs. The musical debuted in Broadway in 1943 and has since been performed in countless school plays and theaters all over the world.
The setting is in Oklahoma territory in the year 1906. A young cowboy, Curly McLain is in love with Laurey Williams. He invites her for the box social dance that night. However, she does not accept his offer, thinking that he was just joking that he would rent her the ìfinest carriage that money can buyî. He actually rented the carriage.
Then, Jud Fry, a sinister farm hand asks Laurey to the dance. She accepts to spite Curly yet she is afraid of Jud. Curly then invites Gertie, a flirty girl to the dance. Chaos ensues at the social. Laurey and Curly confess their love for each other. At the end of the show, the two are married.
