The Philadelphia 76ers is the collective name of a professional basketball team that plays in the Eastern Conference of the NBA or National Basketball Association. The team is also known as Sixers and is based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The Sixers franchise started in 1939 as the Syracuse Reds but in 1946 was renamed the Syracuse Nationals. The team in 1949 became of one of the seven National Basketball League's teams that merged to form the NBA. The team also won the NBA championship in 1955; a championship that was led by the team's forward, Dolph Schayes.
The team was renamed to Philadelphia 76ers in 1963. Its arena is in Wachovia Center in Philadelphia and is the team's homecourt. It is currently owned by Comcast Spectacor under the general management of Ed Stefanski. The team has won three championships, five conference titles and 11 division titles. Official team colors include white, red and royal blue.
