Pittsburgh Panthers is a group of athletic teams that represent the University of Pittsburgh. Otherwise known as the ìPitt Panthersî, the group competes in intercollegiate tournaments under NCAA Division I with its 17 varsity teams. Some of the sports that the Panthers compete in include football, swimming, diving, gymnastics, basketball, baseball, volleyball, and tennis. They are currently being guided by Steve Pederson as their athletic director, as well as each teamís respective head coaches.
Pittsburgh has shown its support for the Panthers by allowing the teams to hold their games at the stateís facilities such as the Petersen Events Center for basketball games, Heinz Field for football meets, and the Trees Field for baseball competitions. Wearing their distinct team colors of gold and blue, the Panthers have been known to be one of the schools who have won multiple national championships in basketball and football.
Being an active team, the Panthers have also gained their fair share of rivals such as West Virginia University and Duquesne University. In fact, the Panthers versus the team from West Virginia University have been known for holding an annual ìBackyard Brawl.î
