Rent is a rock musical production with lyrics and music by Jonathan Larson. The production was based on the opera La boheme by Giacomo Puccini and tells the tale of a group of impoverished young musicians and artists who were trying to survive in New York’s Lower East Side.

The musical was initially a limited Workshop production for three weeks in 1994 for the New York Theater Workshop but gained a lot of popularity and went on to win a Pulitzer Prize and a huge following. In Broadway, Rent won a Tony Award for Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Book of a Musical among many other awards and nominations. Because of its huge popularity, Rent is said to have helped increase the musical theater’s popularity among the younger generation.

The success of the musical production paved way for numerous national tours and several foreign productions. In 2005, the musical was adapted into film that features most of the original members of the Broadway cast.

Rent’s Broadway production ended on September 7, 2008 after over 5,000 performances in a run of 12 years. This made the musical production the eighth longest running Broadway musical with earnings of over $280 million.
