Ruined is a play based on the book by Lynn Nottage. This play portrays the other side of war ñ the use of women as a battleground of sorts, where military men think that they can freely rape women to win the war. It is also a celebration of womenís strength, how they are able to endure the hardships of life and how they could deal with their problems to become stronger.
The play is based in war-torn Democratic Republic of Congo. The play centers on the thatched roof bar-cum-brothel owned and operated by Mama Nadi. She believes that she can survive the war and gain a lot of profit by not taking sides in the war and allowing both sides in her brothel.
She also acts as a shelter of sorts for women who had been raped or abused in the course of the war. In the play, she accepts 2 new girls ñ Sophie and Salima who have both been victims of extreme sexual violence.
