Spring Awakening is a popular American rock musical adaptation of the controversial 1891 German play written by Frank Wedekind. The original play was banned in Germany for its portrayal of masturbation, homosexuality, rape, bondage, child abuse, suicide, and abortion.
The original Broadway cast consisted of Jonathan Groff and Lea Michele. As of 2010, both actors are known for their parts in the musical series ëGleeí.
The play depicts the music of Duncan Sheik and Lyrics by Steven Sater. The story play was based in late 19th century Germany. The storyís main focus is the young individuals who discovered their distressing sexual identities.
The play had several concert, workshops and written it over a seven year span. This includes La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego and Roundabout Theater Company in Lincoln Center. This happened in February 2005 under the producer Tom Hulce.
In 2007, the rock musical play received eleven nominations from the Tony Awards. Later they won eight awards including the best musical, book, score, direction, and actor. The play also coveted four awards from the Drama Desk Awards. The playís London production garnered four additional awards from the Olivier Awards.
