Superior Donuts is a theater play written by Tracy Letts, an American playwright. It premiered in Chicago in 2008, staged by the Steppenwolf Theatre Company. It premiered on Broadway in 2009. It is a comedy drama set in a rather small donut shop located in Uptown, Chicago, well known for being one of the most diverse communities in Chicago.
Arthur Przybyszewski, a former 1960s radical, owns a decrepit, rundown donut shop in one of the uptown neighborhoods of Chicago. The play explores his relationship with his only shop assistant, Franco Wicks who is a troubled, energetic teenage African American boy. Franco aims to help improve the rundown shop by introducing healthier options as well as music to keep the donut shop lively. Arthur has troubles accepting this and would discuss with Franco the events of his past, when the city was much different than what it is now.
The play aims to explore how powerful and redemptive friendship could be. It also explores the many challenges that the characters have to face in order to embrace the past.
