Tampa Bay Buccaneers, also commonly called the “Bucs”, is a professional American football team based in Tampa, Florida. The team is under the Southern Division of the NFC or National Football Conference in the NFL or National Football League. The team joined as an expansion team of the NFL in 1976, along with the Seattle Seahawks. The team first played in the West Division.

A name-the-team contest picked “Tampa Bay Buccaneers” in reference to the buccaneer or pirate legends of Southwest Florida.

The team suffered losses in 26 consecutive games in their first season and almost until the end of the second season. The losing streak made the team a favorite joke subject of late-night television comedians. Its first win was on the 13th week of the second season – against the New Orleans Saints, causing that team’s head coach to be fired from the position. Their second win, this time against the St. Louis Cardinals, also caused that team’s coach to be fired.

Although the losing streak continued, by 1979, the condition improved and the team managed to reach the divisional round of playoffs. The winning era ended in 1982 with the team’s franchise hanging in balance due financial problems. The team entered another losing phase before finally winning the SuperBowl XXXVII at the 2002 season.
