Tennessee Titans is a professional American Football Team based in Nashvillle, Tennessee. The team belongs to the South Division of the AFC (American Football Conference) under the NFL (National Football League). The team started out in 1960 at Houston, Texas as Houston Oilers and won 2 AFL (American Football League) championships before joining the NFL.Problems with the taxpayers and community leaders of Houston over the construction of a stadium for the Oilers led to the owner seeking other cities for the team, eventually picking Nashville. The team transferred to Nashville in 1997 and was called the Tennessee Oilers; however, the team met complications because the promised stadium would not be completed until 1999. This prompted the owner to arrange for the team to play at Memphis – another problem considering the rivalry of the two cities and the distance that fans have to travel to see the new team play.To change image and to coincide with the opening of the new stadium, the team was renamed as the Tennessee Titans – with reference to the city being the “Athens of the South” due to its many similarities to Athens. The first season as Titans was so successful that the team made it up to the SuperBowl XXXIV championship game but lost against the St. Louis Rams.
