About The Color Purple
The Color Purple is a book written by American author Alice Walker in 1982; it received the National Book Award and the 1983 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. The novel is set in the 1930s – rural Georgia – and tells of the life of black females in this area of the Southern United States. Even with a Pulitzer Prize, the book is still considered to be among the most controversial; in fact, it ranks number 17 in the 100 Most Frequently Challenged Books of 1990 to 1999 due to its explicit content. The story revolves around the life of Celie, a poor, uneducated black woman who, at age 14, was raped by the man she considers her father (it was revealed that he is actually her stepfather) and would give birth to two children who will be lost to her but will be recovered by her sister, Nettie, later in the story. Marrying did not free her from hardships as she is often viewed by her husband as inferior – the latter also has a long-time mistress who comes to live in the house and abuses Celie, too. The two women became friends later on. More conflicts follow but, in the end, Celie finds her freedom and works by creating pants for both men and women. The book was later adapted into a musical and a film. The Broadway production started on December 1, 2005 and ended on February 24, 2008. Other productions are scheduled in various theaters across the nation.

Star Rating It was a beautiful musical adaptation of a great story of hope
from the moment the show opened through the curtain I was blown away by the voices of these professional people. I was particularly impressed with Zonya's performance.
