The Drowsy Chaperone is a musical show from a book written by Bob Martin and Don McKellar. Music and lyrics for the musical were written by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison. The show had debuted at The Rivoli in Toronto in 1998. It also began showing on Broadway in 2006. It has won several Tony Awards and other prestigious awards. It all started as a spoof of old musicals for the stag party of Bob Martin.
The Man in Chair was listening to a fictional old musical ìThe Drowsy Chaperoneî when he is suddenly transported into the musical. Within the show that he is now in, the tale is of love ñ of a showgirl Janet (incidentally named after Martinís wife) and the oil tycoon Robert Martin (well, Bob Martin himself). The marriage is hindered by Janetís own commitment and contract in a major show and for the next production.
The rest of the musical is bits and pieces of various musicals, mistaken identities, dream sequences, as well as the own footnotes of the Man in Chair as he watches the proceedings.
