The Importance Of Being Earnest is a theater show, a play by Oscar Wilde. It is among the most successful plays of all time. Debuting at the St. Jamesís Theater in London in 1895, the play has been adapted and played countless times all over the world.
The story involves two young men who are best friends, Algernon and Ernest. Ernest had come to the city to propose to Algernonís cousin, Gwendolen. Algernon discovers that Ernest leads a double life as ìJackî in the country and has beautiful young ward named Cecily. Back in the country, ìJackî talks about his good-for-nothing younger brother ìErnestî. It was soon revealed that Algernon also talks about an invalid friend who he would sometimes visit in the country.
Then, Algernon went to Jackís house and introduced himself as Ernest. He and Cecily fell in love with each other. However, while the 2 men are far from the house, Gwendolen arrived. She and Cecily soon argued, both claiming to be engaged to ìErnestî. The men arrived and resolved the issue.
Towards the end, it was revealed that ìJackî is Algernonís brother and that his real name is ìErnestî ñ something that he himself did not know.
