The Sleeping Beauty, first performed on January 15, 1890, is a ballet with music by Pyotr Tchaikovsky. It has a prologue and 3 acts. It is considered to be the finest of the ballet scored created by Tchaikovsky and is among the most famous ballets in the classical repertoire.
The ballet is based on the fairy tale of the same title but based on the version of the Grimm Brothers. This version includes other fairy tale characters, including Puss in Boots and Little Red Riding Hood. As with the fairy tale, the ballet tells of the christening of Princess Aurora who has fairy godmothers. The wicked fairy Carabosse, who wasnít invited to the party, cursed the baby princess.
The ballet continues as the fairy tale ñ the princess pricks her finger, falls asleep for a hundred years, and is awakened by a kiss from a handsome prince. The whole kingdom wakes with her, the prince proposes, and the couple is wed. At the wedding, there are dances for various characters, including Cinderella and Prince Fortune.
