The Tales of Hoffmann is an opera written by Jacques Offenbach; however, Offenbach died before finishing the story, hence many versions of the ending have been used since the opera was begun. Often, the order of the stories are interchanged, depending on who directs the adaptation, but Offenbach originally created the opera as 1) the Prologue, 2) Olympia, 3) Antonia, 4) Giulietta, and 5) Epilogue. In the Prologue, a muse (actually, Hoffmann’s friend Nicklausse) tells the audience that she is there to turn Hoffmann away from his loves and be devoted to her. Meanwhile, Hoffmann’s love, Stella, calls for him to visit her after a performance in which she is the singer but the evil incarnation, Councilor Lindorf intercepts and intends to replace Hoffmann. In the tavern, Hoffmann is sidetracked by Lindorf to tell the story of his 3 loves – which he happily obliged. His first love is Olympia who is actually an automaton who he sees as a real woman because of special glasses sold by her co-maker; he learns of this in the end. His second love is Antonia who actually has an illness wherein excessive singing would make her die – she died singing in the end. His third love is Giuletta, a courtesan, who is just there to trick him into giving her reflection – she dies in the end. The Epilogue shows Hoffmann declaring that he does not want to love anymore. The Tales of Hoffmann are shown in various theaters nationwide from time to time.
