Three Men on a Horse is a comedic play by George Abbott and John Cecil Holm which tells of a man who discovers he has an uncanny ability to choose the winning horses in a race but thereís a catch, he must never place the bet himself.
The main character of this play is Erwin Trowbridge who is described as a mild-mannered man living with a wife and his brother-in-law. Mr. Trowbridge makes a living making greeting card verses for a minimum pay. When he got bored with this life, he met two men and a woman who makes a living betting on horse races. It was soon discovered that Mr. Trowbridge was quite good at picking the winning horses and so they invited him to join them. Mr. Trowbridge soon began to miss his wife and job as the play progresses. Mr. Trowbridge was also pressured to place a bet himself despite his belief that he will lose his ability if he does so.
The play premiered in English on January 30, 1935 in Playhouse Theatre, New York City. The play has had three film adaptations in English, German, and French.
