WWE
WWE is the popular publicly traded, privately controlled integrated media more formally known as World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc. The sports entertainment company is primarily involved in professional wrestling but also deals with other major revenue sources, namely music, film, product licensing, and direct sales of various products.
WWE was founded in 1952; it has 3 world heavyweight championships – the World Heavyweight Championship, the WWE Championship, and the ECW Championship. It also promotes 3 brands – Raw, SmackDown, and ECW. Still, the company has operated over 20 various championships but had to retire 17 due to various reasons – the latest being the WWE Cruiserweight Championship in 2008.
The WWE had a long history – founders, owners, wrestlers, and managers came and went. It started as the Capitol Wrestling Corporation which was under the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF), then the World Wrestling Federation (WWF). In 2000, this last name caused a problem with another WWF – the World Wide Fund for Nature, an environmental organization who sued the wrestling company. By 2002, the wrestling company changed the name to WWE – including the website.
Following the death of the high-profile talent Eddie Guerrero, the WWE created a Talent Wellness Program which annually screens and checks talents for cardiac problems and drug or alcohol abuse. Those involved in anabolic or other drug purchases even after the program’s implementation were either suspended or released by WWE.
