Wake Forest Demon Deacons are a group of varsity teams that play for Wake Forest. Prior to being called the Demon Deacons, the group was named ìFighting Baptists,î mainly because of its association with Baptist Convention. However, after the teams gained an impressive victory against the ìDuke Blue Devils,î a newspaper reporter cited that the Deacons fought the Blue Devils ìlike Demons,î which later became the reason of the groupís name.
The Demon Deacons is composed of 18 varsity teams that are under the direction of Ron Wellman as the athletics director. The group uses a number of the areaís facilities for its games. For instance, the basketball team calls the Joel Coliseum as its home court, while the football team calls the BB&T Field as its home grounds. On the other hand, baseball games are held at the Gene Hooks Stadium.
The playing teams can easily be spotted when donning their team colors of black and old gold. Among the varsity teams under Demon Deacons, records have shown that the groupís most competitive team is the menís basketball, where they have qualified frequently in the NCAA Menís Division I Basketball Championship.
