About Washington Capitals

The Washington Capitals is a team of professional ice hockey players who play in the NHL’s (National Hockey League) Southeast Division. The team, also referred to as “The Caps”, was founded in 1974, and is based in Washington, D.C. The Caps used to call the Capital Center as its home arena, before moving to the new Verizon Center in 1997.

The Caps are owned by Ted Leonsis, a former executive of AOL, and are managed by George McPhee. The team was not a part of the original NHL teams, but was included into the league as an expansion team in 1974. At the time of its creation, the team was owned by Abe Pollin, who was also the owner of the Washington Bullets. Currently coached by Bruce Boudreau and led by team captain Alexander Ovechkin, the team has 6 division titles to its name with one conference championship title. The Caps team colors are navy, red, and white.
