Young Frankenstein is a musical intended to be a parody to Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. The “Young Frankenstein” book was written by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan while the music and lyrics were written, again, by Mel Brooks and by Irving Berlin.
The comedy is based on the 1974 film Young Frankenstein also created by Brooks. The musical began previews on October 11, 2007 in Broadway and opened on November 11 (and closed on January 4, 2009) at the Hilton Theater.
The story is that of Frederick Frankenstein, the mad scientist’s (Dr. Victor von Frankenstein) grandson, the Dean of Anatomy at Johns, Miriam, and Anthony Hopkins School of Medicine – reportedly the best in New York. Frederick – here, the young Frankenstein – is ashamed of his name and insists that people pronounce it as “Fronkensteen”. Still, when his grandfather died, he inherited the castle in Transylvania. Thus, he had to go there and settle the castle’s affair.
In Transylvania, Frederick was met by Igor and Frau Blücher who managed to convince him to follow his grandfather’s footsteps. To this, Frederick tries to reanimate a dead person but Igor botched the job replacing the brain; thus, a monster was created. More funny scenes followed – including one where the monster became a “gentleman” and followed his “master’s” commands.
After an attempt at intelligence transfer to the monster, the young Frankenstein was hanged by the villagers – after finally accepting his name. The monster wakes up with Frederick’s medical skills and proposes to the latter’s fiancée.
Set and costumes were fantastic!
The play was amazing, the actors & actresses were outstanding & live orchestra touched our hearts with music.
