Seattle Seahawks is a professional American football team based in Seattle, Washington, USA. The team joined the National Football League (NFL) in 1976 and currently belongs to the Western Division of the NFC or National Football Conference under the NFL. It is the only team who has ever played for the championship games of both the NFC and AFC or American Football Conference owing to conference switching with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.Some businessmen and community leaders of Seattle requested for an NFL franchise for the city in 1972. About two years later, an expansion franchise was awarded; on December 5, 1974, the official signing of the franchise was announced to the public. A public-naming contest was held and the name “Seattle Seahawks” selected on June 17, 1975.The team has won 6 division titles – the first 2 under the AFC West in 1988 and 1999, and the remaining 4 under the NFC West in 2004 up to 2007. The team lost the AFC Championship game in 1983 but won the NFC Championship Game in 2005.To pay tribute to the loudest fan stadium in the NFL, the team retired uniform #12 and sold such jerseys to fans. The team also maintains a tradition of having a prominent individual raise a flag with #12 before any home game.
