The Sound of Music is a musical that premiered on Broadway for the first time on November 1959. The music in the production was provided by Richard Rodgers with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, and an accompanying book was released which was written by Russel Crouse and Howard Lindsay. The musical is considered as one of the most well known productions because it was made into an Academy Award winning musical film in 1965.
While the musical is based on the history of the von Trapp family, one could say that the story between Maria and Georg von Trapp has been romanticized a bit, as this is one of the most incorrect parts of the musical.
Nevertheless, the musical has influenced many popular music pieces from various known artists such as OutKast, Gwen Stefani, and John Coltrane. The musical was also given the Tony Award for Best Musical, as well as other awards for its excellence, and for being one of the long running musicals in the business.
