The 101 Dalmatians Musical is a musical directed by Jerry Zaks, sponsored by Purina Dog Chow and produced by Luis Alvarez. The musical is based from the novel written by Dodie Smith in 1956, as well as a number of animated and live adaptation films of the same story. The music of The 101 Dalmatians was written by Dennis DeYoung, a former member of Styx, who also co-wrote the lyrics along with B.T. McNicholl.
The musical follows the story of two dogs, who search through London in search of their puppies. The puppies were stolen by the antagonist, Cruella DeVil in order to make fur coats made of dog skin. The 101 Dalmatians Musical features Rachel York as Cruella DeVil, as well as real Dalmatians who are made to appear alongside the actors on stage.
The musical has been repeatedly praised by broadway critics for the innovative use of live dogs and stilts as well as the breathtaking performances of the actors especially that of Rachel York.
