Annie is a popular Broadway musical that was based on the comic strip by Harold Gray entitled, Little Orphan Annie. The music was created as a combination of Charles Strouse's music, Thomas Meehan's book and Martin Charnin's lyrics.
Annie was one of the most popular musicals of its time. It ran for nearly six years on Broadway and has consequently set a record for the Neil Simon Theater which was then called the Alvin Theater. The music spawned several productions in many countries, won the Tony Award for Best Musical and went to several national tours.
Annie is most popular for its hit songs such as It's the Hard-Knock Life and Tomorrow. The musical also spawned two film adaptations with the same title. The first film was released in 1982 by Columbia Pictures while the other was a made-for-TV film released and produced by The Walt Disney Company in 1999.
