Burn the Floor is a Broadway production that has no plot and only consists of a breathless succession of ballroom routines. The production is directed and choreographed by Australia’s Jason Gilkinson and the show has been touring for a decade now. The popularity of the Broadway production was heightened after several television talent contests that have risen to fame. Burn the Floor introduces viewers the 10 styles that make up international competitive dancing including the quickstep, the Viennese waltz, the pasa doble and the foxtrot.
Performers in Burn the Floor are all professional ballroom partners from around the world. The production team consists of renowned creatives including Harley Medcalf. Medcalf’s team includes Mark Fisher and top director-choreographer Anthony Van Laast. With the involvement of this team, the show consists of 600 costumes, 61 hats and headdresses, 750 feet of organza, 51 masks, 50 pairs of tights and 342 pairs of shoes. The recorded music is from various parts of the world and all sound invigorating and modern. The traditional dance movements such as the pivots, voltas, swirls and sways have been combined with sexy, saucy, hip-gyrating movements. The show consists of two parts wit the first half taking the audience on a global journey. Dancers perform different dances placed in different settings from around the world. The second half consists of sophisticated and graceful performances featuring medleys and old tunes from old Fred Astaire movies.
