About Cher
Cherylin Sarkisian Lapierre was born on May 20, 1946 to parents John Sarkisian and Georgia Holt, at El Centro California. When she was young, her father left them. Her mother remarried to a banker Gilbert LaPierre, who adopted her.
She became popular as a part of a singing act with her husband Sonny Bono whom she met at the age of 16 years old. Bono worked for the record producer Phil Spector at Gold Star Studios where Cher was hired as a session singer as such on “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling” and “Be My Baby”. The couple became popular with “I Got You Babe” in 1965 and “The Sony and Cher Comedy Hour” from 1971 to 1974.
In 1975, the couple divorced and Cher went solo and became a hit with her unusual outfits. She ventured into movies and had her first Oscar nomination with Silkwood in 1983 and Oscar Best Actress for Moonstruck in 1987.
She then went back to singing and released “Believe” which became no. 1 in 23 countries. She then decided to go to a Farewell Tour that ended in 2005. In 2008, she went back for a three year deal to perform at Caesar’s Palace at Las Vegas.
