Cirque du Soleil – Alegria is a touring production of the Cirque du Soleil, which originated from Canada. Alegria , which translates into English as ‘jubilation’ or ‘joy’, was created by Gilles Ste-Croix. It was originally directed by Franco Dragonne. Alegria was originally structured a Big Top show. By the 2009 tour, however, the show was converted in order to accommodate an arena format.
Alegria is considered to be one of Cirque du Soleil’s most popular touring shows. Misuse of power was the main theme that went through the show. It, however, also showed themes of perseverance and hope. Main characters in Alegria include Fleur, Tamir, Little Tamir, the Nostalgic Old Birds, the Bronx, the Nymphs, the white singer, and the white angels.
The show is noted for having a different atmosphere than previously created Cirque shows. It is seen as a departure from the bright atmosphere that cirque is most known for. The name alludes to an expression used when one is in pain or sad.
A film version of Alegria was written by Rudy Barrichello. The film adaptation’s cast included Whoopi Goldberg, Mako, and Frank Langella. Alegria today is a touring arena show. Its former big top is used for the Cirque touring show OVO.
