Hairspray Reviews & Ratings
Hairspray is a musical based on the book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan and the 1988 film by John Waters. The lyrics of the musical were penned by Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman while the music was created by Shaiman.
The story is set in the 1960s and is considered an apt social commentary on the injustices experienced in some parts of the American society. The plot shows the life and dream of plump teenager, Tracy, to become part of The Corny Collins Show, a local TV dance program which does not allow blacks and ìunappealingî personalities to be part of the show.
When Tracy was accepted into the show, she quickly tried to find ways to make the show accept blacks as well as other people who got talent though may not look sexy and beautiful. Tracyís talent made her a star overnight but also gained her several enemies, including the showís racist producer. Tracy eventually wins the show, the love of the audience, and the approval of the showís sponsor.
