Jesus Christ Superstar’ began as a rock opera album then produced for the Broadway stage as a musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. This musical tells the story of Jesus in his last days on earth, as based on biblical accounts, told through rock music characteristic of the 70s era of powerful guitar riffs and hypnotic rock melodies.

In 1971, the musical opened to Broadway audiences and received worldwide reviews, mostly of disdain due to the somewhat sensitive issues on religion. Nonetheless, come 1972, ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ bagged five Tony awards trophies including the Best Original Score for Lloyd-Webber and Rice. Actor Ben Vereen who played Judas Iscariot won an acting award as well.

The rock opera album, on the other hand, featured legendary rock musicians such as Ian Gillan, frontman for British band Deep Purple and Murray Head. Session musicians also made the album more powerful with the likes of Neil Hubbard and Chris Spedding.

Since its original production in the 70s, ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ has reached global venues with productions in numerous cities around US, Europe and Asia. Its film version also met phenomenal success. Original songs such as “I Don’t Know How To Love Him” and “Superstar” became instant hits; the entire soundtrack retains its popularity to date.
