Kentucky Derby is a horse-racing event classified as Grade 1 Stakes that showcases the best three-year old thoroughbred horses. It is held in Louisville, Kentucky every year in May drawing thousands of fans since its establishment in 1875.
The race covers an area of one and a quarter miles. Such short distance made fans coin the phrase ìThe Most Exciting Two Minutes In Sportî to refer to the race. Traditions define the Kentucky Derby. Women come dressed to the nines complete with an elaborate hat--the most intricate headpiece must attract the most attention. The whole derby experience also includes savoring mint julep while watching the race. Fans feast on the ubiquitous burgoo during Kentucky Derby as well. Itís a type of stew with pork, beef, chicken and vegetables.
Each year, Kentucky Derby winners are awarded a lush blanket of 554 red roses by the Governor of the state. This time-honored practice earned for the race another nickname, the Run for the Roses.
