Pearl Jam made its debut in front of an audience in 1991, playing around Seattle in support of other groups such as Alice in Chains. Originally, the group was composed of Stone Gossard, Jeff Ament and Andrew Wood. Wood later died of an overdose, which led to the formation of a tribute project called Temple of the Dog in his honor. The remaining members continued on with a new addition to the group, Mike McReady joining in as the drummer along with Eddie Vedder in vocals.
After signing with Epic Records, the band released its first album TEN in 1992. Anticipation for a second album quickly began to build up but the band was constrained by other various individual side projects. ”VS” was eventually released in 1993. During this time, they were enjoying a successful collaboration with Neil Young which showed more clearly in their 1994 album Vitalogy and with the next album Mirror Ball in 1995.
Following a tragedy that claimed the lives of nine fans during a festival held in Roskilde, the band released another album in 2002 titled Riot Act which contained a tribute to those who died in Roskilde. Pearl Jam also took an active role campaigning for Senator John Kerry in his bid for the presidential seat against Bush, taking part in the Vote for Change Tour in 2004. The band released its latest and self titled album in 2006.
